The emotion filled, grandfather of one of the slain Broken Arrow home invaders decries the chest full of hot, copper jacketed, lead bullets his grandson reaped as his final reward for a premeditated, brazen, daylight break-in of a family residence with the expressed intention to take for his own pleasure and profit that which was not his. You are right, sir. He did not deserve that.
What he and his three compatriots deserved was parental guidance. What he and his three compatriots deserved was to be taught respect for other people and other people's property. What he and his three compatriots deserved was to be taught the difference between right and wrong. What he and his three compatriots deserved was to be taught the importance of choosing associates wisely. What he and his three compatriots deserved was to be taught actions have consequences. What he and his three compatriots deserved was to be taught the consequence of criminal behavior is no respecter of age, gender, creed, momentary lapse of judgment, immaturity, ignorance or simply being in the wrong place at the wrong time with the wrong crowd.
No, sir, "he did not deserve that." But, he was shown a path. That path appealed to him. He chose to travel it. In retrospect, it was a poor decision he was ill prepared to make. It was a short journey and what he discovered at its end was not the easy riches he envisioned but the surprise, shock and pain of a violent end of life.
Now, some of his youthful, surviving, sympathetic, associates will hold a candlelight vigil to lament his fate resulting from that lack of parental guidance and his subsequent bad decisions made along his path. As if displaying a vulnerable, flickering flame as a fleeting expression of remorse, will offer atonement for his inadequate preparation to exercise good judgment.
Perhaps the fading glow of candle light is a symbolic reminder of diminishing parental guidance suffered by a generation; susceptible to the consequences of decisions they are ill prepared to make . . . and they don't deserve that.
Some will plead the difficulty in turning one person from their path to destruction. How impossible to save an entire society from it's chosen path to destruction? None of us deserve that.
