Next Monthly Meeting Scheduled for Thursday, February 3, 2022

7:00 pm

Guest Speakers: State Superintendent of Education Candidate, Dr. John Cox and State Treasurer Candidate, State Rep. Todd Russ

Dr. John Cox, the superintendent of Peggs Public Schools, registered his campaign committee in late April of 2021. Peggs is a 199-student pre-K through eighth grade district between Tahlequah and Locust Grove in Cherokee County.

Cox was the Oklahoma Democratic Party’s nominee for the office in 2014 and 2018, but he is running as a Republican in 2022.

Cox is an educator with 35 years of experience in Oklahoma Public Schools, and he has spent the last 27 years as Peggs’ superintendent.

According to his campaign website, Cox serves as president of the Organization of Rural Elementary Schools, chairman of the Oklahoma Schools Assurance Group and treasurer of the Oklahoma Schools Insurance Group. In the past, Cox has also served as president of the Oklahoma Association of School Administrators.

State Rep. Todd Russ, 60, announced on Tuesday, June 29, 2021 that he will seek the Republican nomination for State Treasurer in 2022. Russ is completing his sixth term in the Oklahoma House of Representatives. State Treasurer Randy McDaniel announced earlier this month he would not seek reelection.

Russ has a B.S. in International Finance, Southwestern Oklahoma State University. Also attended Graduate School of Banking, University of Colorado and School of the Bible, Berean University.

Russ has more than 35 years of banking experience. He served as President and CEO of Washita State Bank in Burns Flat from 2003-2008. During his tenure, Russ took one of the smallest banks in the state and doubled its assets, and was rated the number one bank in Oklahoma for ORE (return on equity) for six straight quarters in his peer group. Russ sold the majority of his bank stock and began management consulting with banks and businesses in 2008.

Russ, who lives in Cordell, has represented House District 55, which covers parts of five western Oklahoma counties (Beckham, Greer, Kiowa, Roger Mills, and Washita) since 2009.

Russ is a fourth-generation resident of Western Oklahoma. He graduated from Sentinel High School in 1979 where he was active in Future Farmers of America, receiving the State Farmer degree his senior year. Russ worked as a welder to help fund his college education. He then attended Southwestern Oklahoma State University, obtaining a bachelor’s degree in Finance. Russ is also a graduate of the University of Colorado Graduate School of Banking. He has specialized training in Asset/Liability Management and Interest Rate Risk Analysis.

Todd is happily married for 27 years to his wife, Khristy, a 20-year veteran public school teacher who also has taught both at Canadian Valley Technology Center and the Western Technology Center. They have three children, Ryan, Lacey and Lauren.
